Now, I am researching in Korean….

The background of my research is linked to education- the assimilation tool the Japanese used when it annexed Korea in 1910. Following the end of the war, Koreans were stripped of their Japanese citizenship, however for those who remained in Japan, contradictions regarding their status became a part of life- ethnic schools were not permitted and it became mandatory to attend Japanese schools. Just as it had been in colonial Korea the needs of Korean students were ignored. They developed a negative identity as they struggled to survive, and in doing so they internalized the Japanese prejudice of Koreans and began to regard Koreans in the same light. This is where Korean’s in Japan have struggled for a positive identity as they continue to discriminate against other zainichi Koreans.
Students who have attended North Korean schools in Japan have not experienced isolation and suffered less in the shelter the schools have provided.
My research intends to demonstrate that without ethnic education students suffer from a negative sense of identity. I intend to do a comparative analysis of narratives written by Koreans students who have attended Japanese schools and North Korean schools.
I asked a good friend if he could help me find narratives written by N. Korean school students in Japan. Well…..he sent me 40 books! AND they are all in Korean! Now, I have to put my Korean back to use, but since they are written by children they don’t seem to be too bad……
