Culturalism is the idea that individuals are determined by their culture, that these cultures form closed, organic wholes, and that the individual is unable to leave his or her own culture but rather can only realise him or herself within it. Culturalism also maintains that cultures have a claim to special rights and protections – even if at the same time they violate individual rights.

I have just translated the above into Japanese. When I looked for the term culturalism on Japanese websites I couldn’t find anything. That is a worry……

I used to belong to a forum for a foreign wives but the traits of culturalism I witnessed made me leave…..

Recently a woman with a Western background and a woman with an Eastern background got stuck in a debate regarding a phenomenon in Korea. The woman with the Eastern background was informed she was missing the point. However, if someone had once stopped and realized they were interpreting the problem through their own Western values they may have understood that the West was not being “attacked”and the problem was just being interpreted in a different way, a collision may have been avoided. Maybe if we could all just step out of a comfort zones and consider there are different cultural ways of interpreting problems we might be able to reconcile some of our differences rather than just attacking from our own chauvinist perspectives???

  1. This is so true. I wish we all had a better understanding of others’ culture rather than sticking into our comfort zone. Cultuarlism is a very important term that needs to be worked and studied on, specially with today’s globalization that raises the need of working on cultural tensions among individuals.
