。。。。。。。。。。。。。。。。。。。。。。。。。。。。。。。。。。。。。。。。。。。。。。。。。。。。。。。。。。。。。。
Japan and Korea have played a soccer match in the Olympics with Korea
winning 2-0.
Not unsurprisingly it is big news in Korea and has not received much
attention in Japan. Best forgotten?_??
At the same time, Korea’s President Lee has paid a visit to the
disputed island Dokdo/Takeshima. Japan has voiced its strong
objections to the visit.
So why now? It has little to do with the Olympics. However, it is the
67 year anniversary of Korea’s liberation from Japan and for Japan it
is 67 years since the end of war. Without a doubt this time of year
has enormous meaning for both countries. In the last 67 years, both
countries have made leaps and bounds in economic recovery.
President Lee’s visit to Dokdo/Takeshima is some sort of political
stunt as his presidency will conclude in February next year. But then
again, Japan’s reaction doesn’t surprise me. Has Japan forgotten that
every year, around this time its politicians visit Yasukuni Shrine
where A class war criminals are enshrined? Every year Asian countries (former foes and victims of Japan’s war time atrocities) request Japan refrain and every year (again) requests are ignored and someone pays their respects.
The surprise visit to Dokdo/Takeshima, Japan’s reactions despite its
insistence on maintain its ties with Yasukuni lead the novice to
suspect there is still a lot of misunderstanding between the two
countries. Both would do better to look at history together invest
more time in positive dialogue.
