The end of my Masters…. My dissertation has been marked and I wait on my exam results…now a time for reminiscing. After a hiatus of 27 years I returned to study. Looking back, I think I was brave…
It was hard living away from JM. I graduated from university before computers, so the changes in the learning environment proved to be confronting at times. Sometimes things were tough but mostly the new challenges gave me a new lease on life…I loved mixing with young people and realised that my “senior brain” could be transformed to a “junior brain” with a little rehabilitation.
When I was living in Korea JM came every 3 weeks to see me. When I first went to live there, he helped me set up my bank accounts, my mobile phone and he even showed me how to use the buses…. When I finally left he came over to help me with my heavy bags…. what a guy!
At Yonsei University my teacher was my age. When she heard I wanted to do research on zainichi Korean she was thrilled. I did feel lonely and lost to begin with but this type of kindness helped me. I attended monthly class parties…it was fun. I studied really hard and was pleased with my results. I applied and was accepted to the Korea University Graduate School of International Studies, I loved being surrounded by intelligent people. I loved debating with my friends rather than gossiping. I loved my young friends who accepted me as their friend immediately.
I loved our Korean language classes, our teacher made us laugh enough to cry. Our Korean Culture lecturer made us think for ourselves. The History of Korean Art lecturer constantly told us she wasn’t a good teacher but somehow I enjoyed her class more than the others…I guess she was wrong about herself? There was a lecturer who seemed to think that she was the most important person in the world because she had a PhD…. Oh well.
At Sogang University the laid back style of teaching language suited me and within 2 weeks I felt more confident in speaking. I soon worked out it wasn’t actually that laid back but just a different approach.
I just loved the Sydney University Campus….I looked forward to attending classes because it was so beautiful! Everyone looked exceptionally intelligent and I wondered if I would be able to cope. I elected to take the dissertation option in my coursework in the hope I might be able to continue and do further research later. At our first consultation my supervisor said “ you are very brave to write a thesis at your age”. I guess I was but I decided I could do it….Now looking back I think my supervisor was the brave one taking me on as his student! Many thanks…..
The classes and writing the dissertation were not difficult, if you tell yourself they are you may as well just give up! I did work hard, every day I sat at my desk from morning till night, I didn’t meet people, I didn’t wear makeup, I didn’t even use that much money!! In 7 months I wrote a 120 page dissertation. It was a lot of work but not that stressful.
Friends and family back in Japan encouraged and helped me with sources for my research. They wrote about their difficult experiences at school, and I learnt the importance of good friendships. Friends who had previously trodden the same path were a great source of encouragement. My brother proof read my dissertation for me and told me things only a sibling can be direct about….
I have regained my self- confidence that I lost in being a wife and parent for many years, however I am in no way over confident, I realise I am one of those students who has to put her head down and work!!
I married young and I gave up doing a Masters after I started, it was the only thing I seriously regret in life, but I have been given this wonderful opportunity and now attaining a Masters degree has become a reality. But now I feel I want to do more… and I would like to make some sort of contribution to zainichi Korean research.
A few weeks ago my supervisor introduced me to an academic from Tokyo who I greatly respect. He seemed positive regarding the possibility of accepting me as his PhD student.
I have spent the last 31 years trying to be the good wife and the good mother, but somewhere along the way I feel like I lost myself. My experience as a student has helped me reclaim who I really am and people now identify me as individual rather than an attachment.
Reminiscing over the last 2 years I recall lots of smiling faces…. Many thanks to all.
