Despite the rise of nationalism in Japan, some people have a conscience. On 23rd September, I attended a rally for former comfort women in Osaka. Although right wingers tried to prevent the meeting there were 400 people in attendance.
Kim Bok-do, a former comfort woman of 86, came from Korea to the forum to bear witness to the atrocities committed by the Japanese army in WW2.
60 years ago and Japan’s politicians still regularly deny these women were cheated and forced into prostitution. How can a country ever be trusted again as a culture of denial fostered by ignorance continues to be tolerated?
In a compelling voice, Kim Bok-do told us how she came to be a comfort woman. When she was 14 years old, a (Korean) village official, accompanied by a Japanese and a person wearing an army uniform visited her parents. They were instructed their daughter would be sent to a sewing factory in Guangdong. If they refused, they would be blacklisted, their estate would be confiscated and they would be sent overseas. With no other choice they were coerced into letting their daughter go. The 14 year old Kim Bok-do passed through via Taiwan and eventually ended up in a comfort station in Guangdong, where she was repeatedly raped day after day; she was forced to service 15 men on a weekday and up to 50 men a day on a weekend. There were guards at the gate and it was impossible for her to escape. After Guangdong she was taken to Hong Kong, Singapore, Sumatra, Indonesia, Java. She travelled with the advancing army contingents and the artillery. The comfort stations were located close to the front lines.
At the beginning of the meeting the Shaminto (Social Democratic Party) member Ryoichi Hattori said a few words; after becoming accustomed to politicians who lie I wasn’t interested in hearing what he had to say. However, I was pleasantly surprised, he turned out to be a politician with a conscience, one who advocates the teaching of accurate history, and the need to reconcile with Japan’s past in order to give young Japanese a future. In Japan’s more recent xenophobic environment, a politician with a vision was reassuring. Unfortunately the majority of politicians are waiting for the comfort women to die so they can close a page on the “Japanese history book of denial.”
However, it won’t work, for the time Japan, although being responsible for past atrocities, will continue to be arrogant while victims despite, sufficient evidence must repeatedly plead their case. Isn’t there something fundamentally wrong with this state of affairs?
Unknowingly, while history is negated, the Japanese of this generation are denying the younger generations a future.
60 years after the war and Japan is still this distrusted? Why? The questions need to be answered by the Japanese themselves.
