Brilliant article by friend Prof. Tessa Morris-Suzuki, on the recent　developments on the comfort woman issue.
The history of the ‘comfort women’ is not (as some commentators in both countries wish to portray it) an issue of ‘Japanese-versus-Koreans’. It is an issue of human rights and human dignity whose implications extend throughout East Asia and beyond.

昨日のハンナーアレンドを神保町の岩波ホールで見て来ました。　毎日が満員と聞いたので　２時間前にやっと切符が買える状態でした。

ハンナーアレンド見て「思考の停止」について考えています。
社会学者見田宗介　の本で読んだ文を思い出した。引用：
日本の歴史の中の最大の失敗はもちろん「大東亜戦争」ですが、日本がこの戦争に「突入」していったことのいきさつは、たとえばナチスドイツのような強烈男が「無責任の体系」と名づけているように、一人ひとりが明確に自分で考え、自分で主張する、ということをしないで、「みんなの意見」に逆らわないように、「時代の流れ」に乗り遅れないように動いていく結果、海に落ちてゆくペンギンの集団のように、戦争に突入していったのでした。

現在の日本も同じと思います。気付いたら戦争？　本来なら過去から見習う事は出来ると思うけど・・・

Yesterday I went to see Hannah Arendt, I just managed to get a ticket 2 hours before it started.

I have been thinking about Arendt’s viewpoint on the social condition when we stop thinking issues through-“The sad truth is that most evil is done by people who never make up their minds to be good or evil.”

I remembered reading about Japan’s participation in WWII and the words of a Japanese sociologist Mita, I have translated his thoughts:

Japan’s greatest mistake when it entered the Great East War (WWII), wasn’t as if it had a powerful leader like the Germany Nazis, just an irresponsible system where no one expressed their opinions, no one protested and everyone just followed the trend of public opinion, in keeping up with the Joneses. As a result of these actions, like a group of penguins falling into the sea, they entered the war. Present day society still exhibits these trends in the corruption and anti-social conduct of enterprises and bureaucracy. The inner workings of these institutions resemble the same organizational mechanisms that lead Japan to war.

拷問試験通過？A torturous exam….

54歳の博士課程学生（私）は　社会学の拷問試験を無事通過した（と思う）・・・ほっとしました！人生色々・・・冒険＠立教大学

I’m 54 and I have just finished my first (tortuous) major oral exam as part of my PhD…a sociology exam (in Japanese)…I think I passed. Wow! Life if for adventures!

朝日新聞で 蓮池透さんが本音で語る素晴らしい記事です・・・

安倍晋三は本当に上手に　すり替えていると思います。パフォマンスです。数年前、拉致被害者家族が書かれた本を数冊読みました。共通する点は　過去　政治家に酷く　冷たくされた事です。日本の公安局を通して　彼らが　事実を知っていたはず・・・なのに　何にも　せず！！今となれば返して貰ってお手柄を取りたいだけす・・・　サイテイ！

今日、韓国民団で　ノンフィクション作家　川田文子さんの　セミナーを聞いて来ました。課題は　慰安婦問題でした。
お話の中で　川田先生が　下嶋哲郎さんの『非業の生者たちー集団自決　サイパンから　満州へ』に　触れました。そのなかで　非常に印象に残ったこと→戦争時に
国民とは、国有された「いのち」のこと
「強制連行された自発性」（その結果として　集団自決）
「世界に例をみない、日本人の特有の死の形
最後に　川田文子さんが　日本がアジアの侵略戦争で　２０００万人、日本人３００万人の犠牲者を出しても　誰が　「特」をしたか　いくら考えても　分からない　述べた・・・しかし　この安倍の家系図のまとめを　見ればまさに　日本の貴族社会！！戦争して　良い思いを　したのは　間違えなくこの人たち！！ だから　戦前状態に戻したい　安倍晋三・・・・

Yesterday I attended a lecture at the South Korean Mindan in Tokyo. The lecturer was Ms. Fumiko Kawata, a writer and researcher on war and violence against women. She is well known in Japan ( for those people with a conscience) for her work on the comfort women issue.

In her talk she referred to how the pre-war Japanese government considered the lives of citizens- as publicly owned property. This train of thought gave the government the “entitlement” to think they could　legalise forced -labour including sexual slavery of women. It also supported forced mass suicide among Japanese citizens at the end of the war.

Ms Kawata surmised that the Japanese War of invasion stole 20 million lives of people in other countries, and 3 million Japanese, but what did it achieve? Who won out of the war? Well………almost no one, because if you look at the family tree of Abe Shinzo you will notice that despite having several war criminals on the chart, the family is still alive and well. Makes sense that he wants to bring Japan back to its pre-war state???

ちょっと怖い着陸 A scary landing.

香港に到着した時。なんと　豪雨の中　飛行機が　一旦着陸したが・・・・ブレーキが掛けられなくて　いきなり又　離陸しました。本当に怖かった。30分も説明が無くて・・・・　一時間後に　無事　着陸・・・
学会どころ　私の葬式になるかと　思いました。　未だ興奮しています・・・・

Very heavy rain as we touched down in Hong Kong.  It was obvious the pilot had little control of the brakes so we took off again!! No explanation of what was going on for the next 30 minutes. It was terrifying. I thought it was going to be my funeral rather than an academic conference. Still very agitated….
